The Madonna of Foligno is a painting by the Italian High Renaissance painter Raphael. The painting was executed for Sigismondo de' Conti, close friend and private chamberlain (camiere segreto) to Pope Julius II, in 1511-1512. It was to be placed on the high altar of the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli in Rome, where Sigismondo was buried in 1512. It was moved to the monastery of St. Anne in Foligno in 1565 and remained there for more than two centuries, hence the name. In 1797 Napoleon's troops took it to France, where it was transferred from panel to canvas. In 1815 it was returned to the Vatican, and today the painting is in the Pinacoteca of the Vatican. This painting was probably Raphael's first public altarpiece in Rome. It represents the Madonna and Child, borne by a cloud of angels and framed by an orange disk, who dominate the group of saints below them, among whom is the donor.
